Between the 4th and the 7th of june 2009 there were held European Parliament elections. They were held in the 27 member states of the European Union. 500 million Europeans are going to be represented by 736 members of the European Parialment and 18 observers.
Overal the EPP-ED (European People’s Party-European Democrats) are the biggest group in the Parliament with 302 seats, followed by PES (Party of European Socialists) with 180 seats. 3th in the row is ALDE (Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe) with 84 seats. 4th are the Non-Incrits (Non-Attached Members, Members of the European Parliament (MEP) who do not sit in one of the political groups): 54 seats, followed by Greens-EFA (European Greens–European Free Alliance) with 45 seats. 6th are EUL-NGL (European United Left–Nordic Green Left) with 34 seats. 7th are UEN (Union for Europe of the Nations) with 32 seats and last are ID (Independence/Democracy) with 18 seats.
There are rumours that the two largest groups in Parliament, the EPP-ED and PES, have already agreed to share the post of President of the European Parliament as they have done for all but two terms of Parliament.
The first half of the term will be taken by Jerzy Buzek MEP of the EPP (who would be the first person from Eastern Europe to hold the post), who will then pass it over to Martin Schulz MEP, the current leader of PES.However, on 26 March 2009, it was reported Italian PM Silvio Berlusconi wanted the EPP’s candidate to instead be Mario Mauro MEP of his party rather than Buzek; bad blood between Berlusconi and Schulz might prevent the PES from consenting to such an arrangement.
