
In Buizingen, a district of Halle, two passenger trains collided head-on in the morning rush hour. According to Mayor Dirk Pieters in Halle, there are twenty people dead. Province Governor Lodewijk De Witte talks about at least ten deaths. Two waggons were completely destroyed and a third is on another track. Infrabel, the operator of the railways, has confirmed that there are many peoples injured. Some people still are stuck inside the waggons. A crisis center was established.
The accident happened around 8:40 on line Brussels-South to Quévy. One train came from the direction of Leuven and was headed for Braine-le-Comte, the other came from Quiévrain and was headed to Liege.
The cause of the traincrash is not yet known. Update: one of the trains ignored a red stoplight, that’s why the crash happened.
