More than 120 dead after tsunami hits the Samoan Islands

Wednesday 30-09-2009 – a powerfull earthquake (8.3 on the Richter scale ) and the tsunamis that followed have made a real disaster on the Samoan Islands. More than 100 people died because of the tsunamis, meanwhile, a new tsunami alert was declared. More countries were warned. For example, Japan, New Zealand, Hawaii and Papua New Guinea, but it was ultimately Samoa – which was situated 190 kilometer from the epicenter of the quake - that got the full brunt. A series of tidal waves up to six meters high destroyed towns and lives. The water flooded the islands a mile inland.

Tsunami Samoan Islands

Tutuila, the largest island, was almost totally destroyed because of the first tidal wave, especially the small village of Sau Sau Beach Fale. The island of Upolu suffered from landslides. Hundreds of houses were destroyed.
Certain is that 120 people died, but the death toll will undoubtedly rise. Hundreds of people are injured and there are many missing.

U.S. President Barack Obama announced a contingency plan for American Samoa, the eastern part of the archipelago that belongs to the U.S. territory. The United States sent relief to Hawaï. The UN has been active in the area.

Tonga

New Zealand meanwhile expressed concern about the isolated little state Tonga Island. A tsunami of four meters high there would also have destroyed the coastline. There are at least ten deaths reported.

The American Hawaïan islands took precautions against flooding.
